From vision to reality: Youth Representatives flock to DPI/NGO programmes

- 29/04/2013

Since 2011 Close the Gap can count on its youth representative in the United Nations in New York. Below an overview on how this program started and evaluated on a short period of time .

Author: Department of Public Information

In an effort to capitalize on youth activism and attract more young people to the work of the United Nations, the DPI NGO Relations Section introduced in 2010 the concept of the NGO Youth Representative. Their response to our suggestion was immediate and encouraging. Scores of Youth Representatives came on board.

Following the successful launch of its Youth Representative initiative, the DPI/NGO Relations expanded its programme by offering DPI NGO Youth Representatives the opportunity to meet monthly in order to discuss and chart  activities for their peers. The Representatives moved into virtual communications by creating a closed Facebook page where the young people could regularly exchange ideas with each other.

Article from Ms. Anjanae Wilson, Close the Gap’s new youth representative at the United Nations in New York.

- 15/01/2013

As a Master’s in Social Work student, I have learned through experience in several different social service sectors of the importance of access to educational resources, such as  information and communication technology (ICT), as tools for social justice within a rights-based social work framework. For most developed countries that are well into the digital age, the rapid dissemination of information, goods and services creates social and economic value.  However, as we move further into the information age, those without access to ICT can easily be left behind in what is known as the digital divide.

Close the Gap’s and WorldLoop’s sustainable approach towards e-waste

- 24/10/2012

On 23 October 2012, the Flemish commercial television station VTM showed a documentary movie on “Telefacts” about the transport of e-waste into Africa. They demonstrate how electric and electronic waste passes through the Belgian customs to be exported to Africa. There the waste is dismantled and often burned in the open air to retrieve some precious components that can be resold on the market. This practice is devastating for both the local environment as well as for people’s health. For Close the Gap, the dumping practice is inadmissible. Therefore, Close the Gap and its partner WorldLoop put everything in place to prevent e-waste in developing countries. Through WorldLoop, Close the Gap offers very concrete solutions for the end-of-life management of the ICT assets delivered to social, medical and educational projects.
